May 23,2011--- Another Rainy Monday

As another weeks start I can see the puddles are dancing about. My puddles in the driveway at this point will never dry up. It rained hard all night. When  the sun comes out the grass is shoot right up if we can get several days of dry sunny days.

I forgot what the feeling of warm dry soil feels like.. I crave garden dirt under my fingernails, I cant wait for the dirt stains on my knees from weeding and  planting. The smells of fresh cut grass and hay. The warmth of the sun is greatly missed.

We worked hard yesterday. Rob really did a great job helping clean up the pile of manure and  pulling fences up that arent needed right now. The front yard is also my driveway and barnyard since you have to past the barn to get to the house. Anthony and I cleaned the chicken coop to get ready for our new baby chicks. A wonderful friend hatches all kinds of poultry. Does an awesome job. We want to add more chickens to the barn yard, I would like to raise 18 turkeys, two for each month during the fall and  winter months. Trying to plan for winters harvest and meat supply. As I feel food will be so expensive and in short supply with all the destruction, floods and tornadoes in the west and southern states.
I plan on redesigning my pantry to hold more canning jars.  I also am thinking of meat birds to can. If I  plan on 4 a month to go into canning jars that 36 jars. Going to can as much as possible to save on the freezer. Would like to cut down to 1 freezer this year. Jacob will go to freezer camp this fall and some of him will be canned also.

Trying to think of a crop to grow for the animals to eat also to help out during the winter.
Lighten my chore load this weekend. Sold alot of the bucks and wethers I had. Plus 3 of the sheep. Time was becoming an issue to get all things done. Felt overwhelmed and needed my animals to be a joy again not a burden. When things arent enjoyed it was like going to a job every morning an dreading it. Summer is busy here, with the gardens and haying and the farm stand, things I need to concentrate on.
Also I will be having a new granddaughter in a few weeks and will have her to care for once her mother goes back to work. I still have does to have babies and am excited about that. The wethers and bucks just got out of control and its my own fault and had 4 I  just couldnt keep behind fences and they were jumping on others cars when coming in driveway and going to the neighbors house, which he didnt mind until time to plant his flowers and then it becomes a problem. So now I still have cows to milk, goats to milk, chickens to raise and  feel so much better.
Have found my happy place again and have that peaceful feeling back.

Have a friend coming over shortly to get some donuts, so I must get busy and make a fresh batch. Might as well do some other baking at the same time. Maybe some fresh cinnamon rolls today also. Going to get the fire going, its 60 in here but its a damp 60 and Anthony doesnt need to catch a chill.

Need to go to the barn and check on the new calf also.
Better get to it. Lots to do

Have a great day

God Bless

Blessed Sunday, May 22,2011

D Another Week has come to a close and another one has started. Praying some of the days this week arent as wet as the past week. We want to get the gardens tilled up and turned over to let the ground and soil warm. Planting is going to be top priority  soon. I have a feeling store bought food is going to be very expensive. the flood in the southern states arent helping.

Have 2 garden space to get tilled up and going to do several container gardens and had a friend tell me she does alot with old tires. I can help out a few people with space tires.
I have received some of my seed will order more this week. Plenty of time the ground is so wet I will be lucky to plant by the first of June. Have lots that came in early in the year.

Its has rained so much here my road to the pasture is ankle deep with mud, thank goodness for high boots. Walked the cows and calf tot he pasture for the first time this year today. hoping to save a little on hay buying if they can eat during the day in pasture and only have to be hayed at night till it get warm enough and some sun make the grass grow better. Sitting watching Jacob the bull walk around the driveway. He keeps getting out of the paddock with the horses. Doesnt go anywhere, just walking around.

I see the people that predicted the rapture for yesterday dont have a  good connection with God. I feel bad for the people that always fall for the silly stuff want to know when the rapture is coming then read your Bible and it will tell you.  Only God knows, thats it. No man can  tell you.  Dont bet your life on any man and his saying, believe  whats in your heart, believe what you have faith in  be true to yourself. Theres no since worrying cause it wont change a thing to worry. Live your life clean and honest and do your best.

I havent been on since Miss Molly had her twins, we now have Hazel and Mack, Ledge Hill Farm finally got a little girl,, finally. I will post picture in the slide show later, they are precious. 3 more does to have babies and Lucy the cow and we are done for a little while unless someone else got breed again, and I am leaning towards thinking Daisy did.

I did sell a bunch of the boys this week and the 2 pigs, I felt bad for the pigs, I just couldnt keep them dry. With all the rain, their pens  just kept holding back water no matter how many ditches we dug to drain it. All the bunnies are gone also,  gave them to a gentleman who has a petting farm. My dogs would of killed them if I had of let them run loose. Beside I need garden vegetables more than rabbits right now. The work load has lightened and I feel sad they had to go, but in the next since I was over burdened and wasnt enjoying myself. Some of the bucks I couldnt keep fenced and my wonderful neighbor is planting flowers again this week and they would go visit him and after awhile he wouldnt have any flowers. Keeping peace in the neighborhood is important.

I have been working on cleaning the big chicken coop. I have a wonderful friend who is hatching all sort of poultry and I am hoping to get more chickens, few turkeys and possible meat birds, guinea hens and such to add to the flocks here. Also it is easier to get someone to help with chores if I need to leave if there isnt 20 goats,20 rabbits.  Not that I ever go anywhere.

Anthony is now up from his nap so we are going to go out and build us a little garden out of stones for some smaller veggies to grow in.

I will post more later alot  to get caught up on, but its daylight  and I need to cut up some wood and get fire going  and few more things done out side.

Have a wonderful Sunday

May 18th,2011 another rainy day

Another rainy day here at the farm. Dreary to be honest. This is what our 4th or 5th day of rain. Its not an all day rain. Its the kind that makes you think oh it stopped raining finally I will go outside. So you get ready to walk out the door and bam, there it goes again. The animals arent enjoying it much either. I must say though with the rain,my goats havent escaped from their new pens.
My neighbor called me yesterday telling me he thought the goats and sheep were out the other day. They were at his house. Now mind you, this gentleman has spent alot of money on his rock banking, flowers galore. He wanted me to know that as soon as the ground is workable meaning not raining and dried enough to play in, he would be adding to his flower garden, In other words, I am warning you I am putting flowers in and dont want them eaten. Really sweet guy. Believe me Nick ,I would love some flowers also.

Scaling back on my herd of goats, all males  in any fashion cut, banded or intact that arent going to be eaten are going. Ok well except the horses. Keeping my girls and I will borrow a buck if needed. Its getting to be not fun any more. When I worry constantly did a male jump the fence, break threw it or are they in the road again. Its time to rethink things. Never mind the cost of grains and hay.
Will add  to the poultry level but four legged need to scale back.  Even cutting back on bunnies, hate having them in cages in summer its just to hot and not fair to them. If they are loose these dogs will kill them. Speaking of dogs they wont like me after the pigs are gone, because summer time will be kennel time for them.

Today is a good sit by the fire day with a good book, knitting or sewing. Maybe even a little cooking. Cooling again I need to fire up the cookstove and wood furnace again. Every thing is just damp an dreary. No clothes line drying today.

Have  a few craft fairs coming up, trying to come up with ideas of simple things, usefull things that might sell that arent to costly to make.

Well I suppose the coffee cup is empty thats my hunt to get busy.

I pray you all have a great day.

God Bless

May 4,2011

God has given us a rainy day. A day to take a deep breath and for me anyways to slow down. My rainy days mean inside work can be caught up on. When the sun shines, outside days are enjoyed.

Yesterday I spent the day hunting down hay(which I am not happy with) and fencing in an area for the sheep. My sheep seem to know when I am not home, they always leave the farm and go on a walk about. So as of yesterday free range no longer will be for the sheep.
Hopefully with in a month  I can turn everyone into the big pasture, but need to wait til the ground dries a bit and the grass grows more.
With the rains of today all the animals will be kept int he barns.

After the long day of yesterday I am looking forward to a day inside. I can clean and sew, bake and just enjoy a slower pace. My muscles all hurt from putting  up and trying to stretch the chain link fence I used for the sheep.

Mother Nature is filling all my water tubs so  one less thing for me to do today.

Thinking about starting the cook stove up and taking the chill off inside and doing some baking this morning and sewing this after noon. Cup of hot tea, hum of the sewing machine sounds heavenly.

I do have the newest issue of The New Pioneer magazine, which I cant wait to read.
Such an informative magazine. It doesnt come out every month and its a little expensive but i think its worth it for the information you get out of it, This one is the summer edition. So I do believe lunch time will be enjoyed by a little reading.

As I read things  that really interest me I will pass things on thru here.

Tomorrow is Rob and my 4th wedding anniversary, cant believe its been 4 years already. As Rob says 4 days,4 months, 4 years,40 years all passes quickly. Such a romantic,NOT.

Have you decided what your planting this year? Have you deicded to plant more or less? You know everyone can plant something to help with the food budget. From window boxes to plant pot, even just a bucket. I am going to put alot of my tomatoes and cucumbers in buckets and  trellis them. Peas and beans can be done the same way. Our snow is finally gone so next week going to be starting to put together my raised beds. Been putting  some gardening things off til the goats and sheep are contained.

I have thought and rethought over things to plant. Concentrating more on just what we eat, how to preserve them and  then what will sell on the farm stand.
The monies from the stand goes back into the farm to purchase things we cant grow, salt, sugars baking supplies. At some point we want bees, but one step at a time. Need to get things finished before starting new projects. Have learn in the 10 years of being here sometimes I put the cart before the horse and it makes more work in the end. So now thinking smarter and working smarter. Since Rob drives truck every day and can be gone from dawn to dark, I am the one to do most of all the work here from chores and animals to gardens and household fixing. So if I use my brain and  not my brawn sometimes it works better for me.

Well its that time of day that Nick needs breakfast and  morning chores needs to be finished. The a fire and baking.
I hope you enjoy your day.

God Bless

May 2,2011

Awh May 2nd, the sun is up and shining brightly. The temperature is rising. A great day to get outside and  do more yard work. The animals are all running about. Thinking about walking them to the pasture and let them romp around up there. I know its still wet up there but  theres lots of dead stuff to climb on and trees that can be eaten.
For some reason Onyx is blatten terribly, he must of lost his momma some where. LOL

I have the cookies all done and cinnamon rolls will be rising shortly, had to get it warmer in here so they would rise. Time to let Dot and  Lucy and Knickers out also. wish the paddock was dryer I could  them back in there. But dont need Knickers slipping and falling out there.

Going to be rainy most of the week so today is going to be an outside day. Hoping the lady who wants Andy and Deanna calls soon about picking them up today. Funny to watch Molly run up the driveway , she is due shortly . She looks like she has two suitcases on her sides. Twins I am betting at least.

Been rethinking our goat herd and the cost of raising everyone. Its terrible to think I cant keep them all and some of them cant be pets they have to be either food or leave.
I cant grow enough of the grain to feed them , and have to buy so much, it doest make sense on the pocketbook. Reality of the  facts of life. Some choices in farm life are hard.

Starting my seeds today or this week also. We might be able to plant by Memorial Day if we are lucky. Looking for more garden space in my area. Need to plant more this year  than ever before. Going to being doing alot of raised beds and container planting. Everyone can grow something to help out the food budget, even if it lettuce in a flower box to herbs and hanging cucumber and tomatoes plants. Something.

Well I guess its time to go outside and play with the goats and sheep, and let Dot and Lucy out.
I hope your having a great day.

God Bless
