February 27,2011 Another winter storm

Another morning finds me sitting  in this computer chair staring out the window at yet another storm. I find no humor in this at all. Friday-Saturdays storm dropped another 13 inches of fresh white unwanted snow on us. I am very Blessed to have a friend plow me out all the time. he is surly going to be missed when he isnt logging up here any more. He has been a great blessing every snow storm, rescued me from being stranded and Rob from having to really plow at all this winter. Thank you Steve Rizza.

This morning the air must be just right the cook stove is burning beautifully. i do believe this summer one of the chores will be adding several more blocks to the chimney. Sometimes there just isnt enough draft. I think while it is going so well a baking day is in order. Wish i could open up the farm stand but everything will freeze. Have some remodeling to do to the farm stand this  spring, I would like to add shelves to the back wall and  maybe a few in the front also. A new roof is in order and doors on the sides to be able to shut it up in the rain. Everything in time.

Rob is spending the day at Newfound lake with the Alexandria Fire Department as today is the last day of the fishing derby. Gives him a break and he gets to hang out with the other fire fighters doing fun stuff. A really great bunch of people.

Was contacted by a guy who has a ram I can have, now just have to find a way to Cannan and get him. Kind of over kill to use the big livestock trailer for one ram.

Been rethinking the animal and livestock, poultry situation over. I am considering raising extra of everything if possible. The cost of meat and products from the store are going up and up weekly sometimes it seems daily. So figuring the more I can raise the better off we will be next winter. You never know  from one week to the next how much things are going to cost. The more I can raise at home and can, dehydrate and preserve I will feel better. i am still hoping for a root cellar this year. I know we have alot to do, but I think a root cellar is something that should be on top of the list, right up there with my new chicken coop and a pole barn, and a goat and sheep enclosure. i would like to extent the  shelter for the horses and cows to  go the entire 40 feet of the barn and separate into 2 pens for them. praying both cows are bred, would be nice to get a heifer and a bull. Adds to next years freezer camp and the milking herd. Hoping to expand the goat herd to 6 milkers. Need to find some one to teach me cheese and soap with the milk. I love goats milk soap and so do my hands. Not sure the laws about selling cheeses and things but i will find out before hand. Have my order in for 6 dozen more laying hens.1 dozen turkeys and 6 guinea hens. I think I am going to increase the chickens to get 4 dozen chicks so next year I will have fresh chickens laying. Need to get me a few roosters also, mine finally died of old age and I miss the morning wake up calls.also thinking about adding a few ducks to the farm for duck eggs. For those who cant eat chicken eggs can eat duck eggs. Alot of work. But we will know what we are eating and know where it comes from. Trying to be less Dependant on the stores and more on ourselves and what we can raise.

Other than my ACO job this will be my full time job this summer, I am devoting all my time to the farm, the animals, making and selling, bartering what we need and making everything else.

Things I want to learn to do, spin my own wool as I have 2 Icelandicsheep,I want to learn the ole fashions ways of preserving meats with brines and salts. Would love our own smoke house to do our bacons and hams. I read a post from some one else and they had lamb bacon, never give it a thought. I dont want to have to buy any meats for this family next year. May take a little getting use to  and a lot of hard work and learning but I know we can do it. The more we  change our way of thinking and living the less we depend on electricity and the world to deliver what we need. This year instead of freezing my berries and waiting to fall to make my jams I am going to use them right away.since last fall one of the freezer became  unplugged and I lost almost 100 qts of berries.

By simplify our lives we should  have less stress, not less work, simple doesnt  mean less work usually the opposite, but thats ok with me.

Going to start making my summer skirts and do away with these jeans, only keep them for the ACO job, I really do hate pants. Told Rob yesterday I wanted to find some of the green wool pants and make Anthony some pants for next year just like they wore int he ole days. I know I can make all his clothes also. need to remember how to turn a heel on socks and i can make everyones socks for the year also. Knew once and for some reason its  one thing I cant remember after having my stroke.
Free cycle has been a blessing as far as new sheets and towels, old towels have been cut down into wash cloths and dish rags or cleaning rags. Sheets have been made into home made cloth napkins, no more buying any more paper product than I have to. Now if  I could make toilet paper I would be happy. LOL

I have been able to buy cloth diaper on sale and my new grand daughter coming in June will wear cloth diaper when I have her.  I cant seem to find the ole fashion baby diaper rubber pants any more, so need to figure out how to keep her dry and not soaking her clothes between changings..Cant wait to have Lilly Grace around, theres nothing more enjoyable than having a baby cooing and giggles. I have Anthony who is now 2  to keep me busy and this summer  I  am sure more grandchildren will come see me.

Alot of thinking  going on this morning, cant go out right now Anthony needs to settle down for a nap, then I can go do morning chores. Wont be long he has been up since 4am. Time to get busy and dishes, laundry started.

Hoping you have a wonderful Sunday

God Bless

February 25,2011, another winter storm

Yesterday was such a pleasant day. I spent several hours running
the wood splitter a dear friend let me borrow. After having that nasty stomach virus for 24 hrs, i was completely exhausted. And of course 2 days before that was spent haul and pushing 900 lb, round bales of hay around. I really did over do it and I think the stomach virus was a way for me actually just stop. I would of preferred a better way myself. I did spend part of Wednesday curled up in a ball on my bed just wanting to sleep. Which is rare for me. Was nice to get a lot of wood split.

Today is a totally different story.snow, snow and more snow. I think we will be having snow until June. We have received another 8 inches already, since 8 this morning. I really have enjoyed all the winter I want to. Cant wait til spring gets here. The thoughts of warm dirt on my feet, dirty finger nails. The thoughts of tiny sprouts peeking thru the warm soil is such a pleasant thought. I honestly cant wait to feel the sun warm the ground. To watch grass grow is a  nice dream. To feel the warmth of the sun beating down, while riding around on the tractor haying. Ok wake up, its still snowing....

Today I think I will make some bread, I have to make alot of donuts for the fishing derby for tomorrow. I saw some adorable patterns for  baby blanket, I think i will make a few later.... Lots to do, so I ought to get busy.
I hope you guys have a great day. Please stay safe and warm.

God Bless

February 22,2011 Blustry Day

Today the sun is shining but it is very deceiving out there. The bright white sun as it came up didnt look very inviting at all. Sitting here enjoying my coffee and homemade cinnamon rolls watching the goats run around the driveway. Little Jeffrey is 4 hoof drive this morning slipping and sliding around.
The temperature has made it above 10 degrees but the wind is still blowing so its still below zero or real close to it out there.
I will go out and do chores after Anthony takes his morning nap.
I have taken the day off from leaving the mountain. Rob had to have the truck and left extra early, I didnt feel like waking Anthony up  to ride to Sanbornton and back probably to sit here all day. Saves on gas also. Good day to heat the house up and do some extra cleaning and laundry, baking and just puttering around.
I over did it Sunday unloading the round bales and yesterday cutting and trying to split wood. I am still exhausted. Thinking its a good day to bake an sew an get back to basic.

Going to be putting a nice pork roast in the oven, cooking the last of the blue hubbard squash, mashed potatoes and gravy  for supper, going to be making some homemade bread shortly.

Hoping to do some sewing this afternoon, I want to make some cloth shopping bags and little apron.
Well I guess thats all for now. I am hoping you have a great day stay warm and safe.

God Bless

February 17th,2011 Glorious Day

What a glorious day! My temp outside is reading almost 60. 60 in February,.,, melt snow melt.
I have been puttering all morning outside. Have moved the 3 adult pigs to Wilburs old pen, maybe they can stay drier. and it will give me a chance to clean up the mess in front of the goat barn.
Ever had them  days ya just wanted to stay home. I do,it is a day to open the windows flush out the old stale air of winter and welcome in the new fresh air, even if tis only for a day or 2. I know this is just a tease for whats to come in April. But could ya hang around a few more days,, I will deal with the teasing.
Got to take the winter sides down on the rabbits and let them enjoy the sun also. The goats and sheep are all basking in the warmth of the sun.
Decided not to bake today and let the fires die down to just a little fire just enough to keep them going. Way to nice to waste wood. My face actually feels sun burnt from shoveling the log pile out.
I do have to go clean the rental house. Be glad when spring gets here and business picks up here. I really do hate leaving my home. The farm will be up and going  in a few months. Seeds have been ordered, chickens have been ordered,.. New chickens and turkeys, guineas hens will be a pleasant addition to the farm. The petting farm will be up and running once the snow goes enough for people to want to come out.

Need to find out if Rob plans on tapping any trees this yr, the cost of sugar is terrible, maple syrup and honey will be the sweetener of choice in this house. I would love some bees.
Tonights supper is going to be a summertime favorite, macaroni salad, the ole fashion kind with tuna and , frozen peas,, not the canned things yuck.. If i was going to town I would pick up the stuff for pasta salad but trying to conserve trips to town. Hot dogs and I have a steak out for Rob. Some nice ice tea and a big piece of chocolate cake for dessert.
I suppose I cant put off going to work any longer, would really rather find my way to the sewing machine and make things for sale on the web site.

You all have a glorious day and if you have this beautiful sun shine get out side and  just soak some of it up,,it does a body good.

God Bless

February 15,2011

Meet Jeffrey. Born to the farm on Feb 12th 2011. Love it how these animals just know how cold it is and they are born with full beautiful heavy coats.

I just watched a beautiful sunrise, the colors of pinks and purples were beautiful. Channel 9 the local tv station say we are in for a warm up for a few days any ways. I cant wait to be able to open the windows and let that old stale winter air get pushed out by fresh clean air. We still have alot of snow, but would love to see it melt down a few feet.
Thinking in the warm weather i am going to start to try to milk Daisy. I think  once i get her alone and with some grain she should be fine. The triplets are going to be 3 mos old on the 28th and they are ready for new homes.
Next new babies should be the calfs from Dot and Lucy. I dont think Amelia is bred, I  felt her udder the other day and there was nothing there. She will be here 6 mos in March so there should be a slight bag if nothing else, but will keep watching.

Just took a nice chocolate cake out of the oven, cinnamon rolls will go in shortly and cream puffs after that. Feel like doing some baking today.

Need to get the roast going for supper, I have a training tonight for my ACO job with animal emergency preparedness, should be interesting.

Made 4 gallons of laundry soap yesterday , have it all re bottled. Looking up new recipes for dish soap now. Cutting cost every way possible, their saying the cost of living will be going up another 30%. The same sugar I paid 2.19 for 3 mos ago is now 3.79. Just stupid. People are going to be making harder choices, paying for heat and bills and food, things were tough for some before, their not getting any better.

I cant wait to get my hands in some garden dirt. Bigger and better this year. Have to, things are just out of control at the stores,. The cost of fuel for the truck goes up every few days. I have combined every trip to have more than one purpose. Less eating out, only when we have to, no processed food, one they make us feel terrible, just because they are quicker and easier,, they arent good for you. Thank goodness summer is coming the electric bill will go down because the animals wont be getting hot water to drink. That has taken a huge toll on  the light bill more than doubles it, so we have had to find ways to cut back on other things, to make up the difference.

Have put my order in for 6 doz more chickens, 12 turkeys  and 4 ducks and some guinea hens.. Spring  oh spring round the corner and stop at grammas house  soon.

I do suppose it time to get busy, stoke the cook stove to get the oven back up to temperature to cook some more goodies.

I hope you have a blessed day and  enjoy it  no matter what your doing

God Bless

Februarys 06,2011, Howling winds

February is coming in and showing it strength for winter. Last night I think we experienced every kind of weather except heat and humidity. We went from snow, sleet, freezing rain, wind, thunder and lightening. The wind has a hold on us now. its howling pretty hard out there.
Its still dark out there but with the barn light glowing I can see the snow swirling around like leaves do in the fall. The thermometer on the pole is above 20 out there. When day light gets here, I will be able to tell how much snow we got. I dont believe we got the 4-8  they called for. I am not complaining honestly. Today if its is warmer we were cutting wood, but Rob came home last night very sick. Anthony doesnt feel well either, he just has a runny nose.
Cant wait to go check the barn to see if we have a new baby. One of my goats has bagged up and  looks like she should be due any day. I was figuring last night with all the temperature changes she would have her baby. That would be my luck. Put her in the big barn with Daisy and triplets. If Amelia the sheep doesnt give birth by Next month then I know she isnt bred. The lady I got her from thought she might be. Want sure though. Thinking with the wind and cold factor running thru the house, it will be and inside working day. I should do some baking for the week, so Rob and Nick have sweets for their lunches. I dont want to be out in this wind anyways.
Also another chore is making laundry soap today. Watching Anthony  watch Barney he is falling asleep again,, he is so cute. My big boy will be 2 on Friday.

Surprised we havent lost power with the strength of the wind. Well I guess its time for me to get busy. Cinnamon rolls and cake and brownies arent going to cook themselves.
Have a wonderful Sunday. Stay safe and sound, warm...

God Bless
